This past year, the U.S General Services Administration (GSA) has upgraded its green building standards, requiring Gold certification for all new federal construction and major renovations. Updated from the previously LEED Silver requirement for all federal facilities, the upgrade applies to future projects as well as projects currently in design. Properties that GSA leases that are less than 10,000Ft2 will remain at the LEED Silver requirement.
Unfortunately, many may see this as a waste of tax dollars but if the projects are overseen right and designed thoughtfully then the new requirement should not be seen as a waste of money. One can only hope that the GSA will be mindful of our tax dollars in designing these new projects. Despite the controversy over our tax dollars, changing the LEED Silver to LEED Gold is the next step forward in creating a more energy-efficient society.
