Germany, who have been a world leader in the solar power industry, hit the record books last Saturday by pushing 22 gigawatts of solar power per hour into the national grid; according to inhabitat.com . The amount of energy was enough to provide nearly 50% of the country’s weekend and nearly 30% of the country’s weekday (when factories and offices are open)  electric needs and equals 20 nuclear power stations at full capacity. Germany responded to the Fukushima disaster by making the decision to completely shut down nuclear energy over the next decade and with their recent dismissal of eight prominent nuclear power plants they have become 20% renewable.

The fact that one of the world’s leading industrialized nations is making significant strides in moving towards renewable energy should be an inspiration for us and the rest of the world to follow suit.
